Growing up in the church, there was a song that the saints used to sing that said, “Standing, standing, standing on the promises of Christ my Savior, standing, standing, I am standing on the promises of God.” What does it mean to stand on the promises that God made? What promises did God make? The definition of stand is to have or maintain an upright position. Another meaning of stand is to be situated in a particular place or position. Let’s look at the definition of a promise. A promise is defined as a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen. 2Corinthians 1:20 says, “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”
To stand means you have decided in your mind that your body will place itself in an upright position. It is the same in the spirit. We are positioned in the Word of God. Once we make up in our minds and accept the promises given to us by father God, our stance becomes despite what I experience; I choose to believe what God says I am, what God says I can have, and what God says I can do. Taking a stand on the promises of God means your complete faith has been placed in what He says. Situations may happen, but your stance remains the same: God, you promised, and I trust you. God can do anything but fail. We say all the time that God is perfect in all His ways. That means there is no imperfection in Him. There is nothing He must work on when it comes to Himself. We may have to work on our attitudes, how we respond to others, or how we receive correction. God does not. There is nothing about him that is incomplete, nor does He need help with anything. God is perfect. He is incapable of breaking a promise.
The shortcoming is in us. We can have every promise that God has for us. We have to remember that there is a time for everything. We cannot be so anxious and give up when the promise does not happen when we want it to. God knows when it is the right time, and when we can handle it. There was a girl that we will call Jill, who saw a car that she fell in love with. It had the right interior color and amenities that she wanted. She asked her parents if they would purchase the vehicle for her. They agreed. Weeks went by, and soon weeks turned into months and months into years until three years passed. Finally, Jill went to her parents and reminded them that they said they would buy the car, but they did not. Her parents looked at her in agreement. Her mother said we meant it when we said we would buy you the car, but you were not ready then. It was not the right time. The mother reminded Jill, you were only 13 years old; you had to mature. God does not go back on His Word. If He says it, it is so. We have to trust the timing of God because He knows when we can handle what He wants to give us.
What are the promises of God? The Bible is filled with promises from healing, finances, salvation, peace, joy, to God providing for your every need, and more. There is a Word for your need. God will also speak to us through our leaders, prayer time, or alone time things that He wants to do in our lives or a loved one’s life. We have to be aware because God is always speaking. Don’t worry or become discouraged when a situation does not work out the way you thought it would. Instead, continue to remain strong in the Word that you know. I remember how God kept His promise to my husband and me by providing for our every need. When we first got married, we were living in an apartment. Pretty soon, we made up in our minds that we wanted a house of our own. We began to speak the Word of God that he would provide for our every need concerning this. Not only did we speak life and put it into the atmosphere that we were homeowners, but we also had our sons speaking it. Some months went by, and then finally, we were able to find a home. It seemed like every bank we went to turned us down for one reason or another. Finally, one day I went to a bank, and they approved us for the loan. The interest rate was low, and everything came out to a price that we could afford. God came through right on time.
I want to encourage you to keep standing on the promises of God and don’t give up. Sometimes life can bring situations that can be challenging. It may feel like you are doing your best, but it is not good enough. I want you to know that God is for you, and He is on your side. God is working things out on your behalf. Think about the promise that God made to Abraham. God made a promise to him that he and his wife, Sarah, would have a child. Years went by before this promise came to fruition. Chapter 4, in the book of Romans, talks about Abraham and how he did not doubt or waver even though he and Sarah were about 100 years old. The Bible said that Abraham grew strong and empowered by faith, giving glory unto God. When we are waiting on the manifestation of promises, how are you waiting? Are you increasing your faith? Are you still praising God now, or are you waiting until you see it? Remember, God is always watching, so He cares how you wait. God is at work on your behalf at this very moment. Continue to speak His Word and have a made-up mind that you will stand on the promises of God no matter what.
Thank you for reminding us that we must wait with the right attitude while we are standing on God’s promises! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and your family!
